Don’t own what you don’t want to keep!
Take a moment to listen to yourself when you talk about what ails you. Are you ‘owning’ it? Do you use possessive pronouns to describe the issue – MY sciatica or MY migraines? You may not know it, but by using language like this you are inadvertently showing a committed attachment to it.
In truth, these are things that happen to you; they are not you.
There is a school of thought that says you shouldn’t own your ailments because when you possess the ailment you don’t want to let it go. Our subconscious minds know all too well what it feels like to lose something and although these times can be difficult and painful, we tend to work through them until we are able to move forward. Conflict arises when you have a condition or illness that you unintentionally own. It makes it so much more difficult to shift into a new mindset and be free from what holds you back. But you can change this!
Firstly, change your language. Detach yourself from the ailment and lift the burden of ownership. You could use phrases like ‘I am experiencing sciatica’ or ‘I need medication for this migraine’.
Secondly, reflect on when you first noticed the ailment. What was happening in your life at the time you first noticed it? Who are you without the ailment?
