Reclaiming Power and Regaining Control

16/10/2024by Terry White

Anger is a universal emotion, often sparked when we feel disrespected, unheard, repeatedly overlooked or unjustly treated. It’s a normal human response in situations where we feel powerless, and in these instances, anger can feel like the only way to reclaim some sense of control; however, while it might feel justified, it can quickly become detrimental when left unaddressed.

Anger serves as a protective mechanism, masking our deeper feelings of fear, hurt, and insecurity. And when it stems from feelings of powerlessness – where we feel trapped, unable to make our voice heard or take meaningful action – is our mind’s way of saying, “This isn’t right. I need to do something about it.” It signals that boundaries have been crossed or that something important to us is at risk. At this point, anger becomes our instinctive shield against vulnerability.

When we continually feel powerless or unable to assert ourselves, anger can manifest in several unhealthy ways, such as:

  • Explosive and aggressive outbursts, and even physical confrontations.
  • Internalizing and building resentment, leading to passive-aggressive behaviours.
  • Stress-related physical and mental health issues.
  • Overcompensation by trying to control every situation, micromanaging aspects of our lives or relationships in an attempt to regain control.
  • Strained personal and professional relationships.
  • In some cases, turning our anger inward, blaming ourselves for the lack of power, which can lead to depression and self-sabotage.

So, how would you even begin to deal with anger as a result of feeling powerless?

  • Admit that you feel angry and powerless.
  • Identify the root cause of your feelings.
  • Express your emotions constructively through productive outlets such as journaling or speaking to a professional.
  • Set clear boundaries and learn to communicate your needs clearly without aggression.
  • Focus on what you can control and use the energy of your anger to motivate positive change or creative expression.

It may seem simple when it’s written down in bullet point form, but there is work to do behind each one. Managing anger can be a complex process.

This is where life coaching can make a significant difference. A life coach provides a safe, non-judgmental space to explore the root causes of your anger, develop coping strategies, and regain control over your emotional responses. Our coaching sessions help individuals like you navigate these difficult emotions, offering tools and techniques to turn anger into a powerful force for positive change.

Don’t let anger and powerlessness hold you back.
